ACMAD

ACMAD

The African Centre of Meteorological Applications for Development’s (ACMAD) vision is to become a world class continental meteorological centre enabling resilience to disasters and increasing ability to reduce climate change impacts across the continent. It was created in 1985 through the Resolution 540 of the Conference of Ministers of Economy, Finance, and Planning of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) for the purpose of acting as the continental weather/climate watch institution and the Centre of Excellence for the applications of meteorology for sustainable development.

It builds capacity, develops methods and tools, strengthens Africa’s contribution to global weather and climate programmes, establishes and shares databases, and undertakes research in meteorology.

The Centre enables provision of weather/climate monitoring, forecasts and regional early warning for drought, tropical cyclones and other extreme weather/climate events.

It provides products, information, knowledge, advices, methods and tools, competencies and capabilities contributing to implementation of the African Union Agenda 2063, the African strategies on climate change and disaster risk reduction and relevant sustainable development goals with emphasis on Goal #13 on combating climate change. ACMAD enables National Meteorological and Hydrological Services to benefit from funded research and development cooperation programmes through continental projects.

Since 2015, ACMAD is a WMO designated Regional Climate Centre (RCC) for Africa. It is a pioneer operating Regional Climate Outlook fora across Africa since 1998. ACMAD has been building user interfaces for applications for agriculture, disaster risk management, energy, water and health sectors. Examples include a vigilance service for meningitis epidemic surveillance and control with WHO; hazard outlooks; high impact weather forecasts; advisories and watches; potential expected impact predictions; preparation and response measures for disaster management for UNDR, IFRC and DRR platforms in Africa; drought and floods watches for agriculture and food security; annual state of Africa's climate reports for negotiators and policymakers at UNFCCC CoPs; regular 10-day and monthly climate diagnostics to guide National Meteorological and Hydrological Services.

ovo

OVO

Since more than 20 years, OVO has been facilitating cooperation between Belgian companies / entrepreneurs and socio-economic projects in low and middle income countries. OVO can call on the skills and networks of some one hundred volunteers, mainly from the business world. In addition, OVO is part of a broad network of companies, universities, NGOs, public institutions, etc.

OVO’s strong team of more than 60 experienced managers and entrepreneurs screens and coaches local entrepreneurs. Based on advice and reflection, local entrepreneurs are 'challenged' to strengthen their business model and develop a convincing, realistic business plan. OVO’s network supports optimization of inflow, and ensures proper follow-up of entrepreneurial projects. In 2018, OVO started an intake process for local African entrepreneurs called Sustainable Technology for Africa (SusTech4Africa/ST4A). Once a year, a 'call for projects' is launched in focus countries. Local companies can apply for a partnership with OVO for a certain period of time. With this concept, OVO has optimized the inflow of quality and impactful projects and increased the involvement of Belgian entrepreneurs and experts.
